The global healthcare industry
is undergoing much needed transformation focusing on
improving internal operations, reducing administrative
and clinical costs, and becoming more "customer
focused." Globally, the annual expenditure for
healthcare is over $3 trillion, or roughly 8% of the
world's gross domestic product. In the United States,
annual healthcare spending exceeds $1 trillion, occupying
the largest sector of the nation's economy. Healthcare
is also faced with pending government regulations such
as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (HIPAA), which mandates security and privacy practices
and the aging population in the developed world and
the continuous introduction of new medical technologies,
drugs, and approaches to well-being add more layers
of complexity.
The challenge for today’s CIO is integrating disparate
legacy systems and heterogeneous applications within
their enterprises. Currently, most healthcare data exchange
is based on point-to-point custom interfaces, an increasingly
complex and costly solution as the information demands
on enterprises expand. Fortunately, merging legacy systems
with new technology is not unique to healthcare. Healthcare
CIO’s, like all information executives, need both
a strategic framework and products to support interoperability. |
